Thuy's Formal Offer to W. Africa: Preparations and Paperwork

Written: Thursday, December 4, 2014

Shortly after Thuy received a call from PIH informing her that they want her on their team of doctors that will travel to West Africa to treat those infected with Ebola, PIH sent her an email (see below) with a formal offer and a few attachments with files that she would have to promptly fill out and return to PIH.

As far as I've been told, she is supposed to leave on January 5. We're already about a month away from this new adventure.

On Monday, December 1, the day after Thuy got her offer over the phone, Thuy received the following email:

Thuy,

I am pleased to offer you the temporary Clinician position at Partners In Health and have attached a formal offer to this email.  Within the next 24 hours you will receive an email from Partners in Health Human Resources Department that will provide you with important documents that you will need to review and complete.

Thank you for your willingness to help people affected by this outbreak.

Sincerely,

JF

In the email were three attachments: The offer letter, the release agreement, and the enrollment documents. Over the next few days, Thuy would need to fill out these documents and courier them and her passport to PIH so that they could get to work on securing her plane tickets and visa into the country.

Thuy hates paperwork in general; as you can imagine for an opportunity like this, there's quite a bit of paperwork involved. I actually think she dreads the paperwork process more than she dreads Ebola.

Wednesday is one of Thuy's days off from work. She spent the first half of the day getting her vaccination for yellow fever, another requirement for those traveling to West Africa. Much to our surprise, she went to Costco (yes...Costco) to get her vaccination. I tell ya, that store really does have everything.

The second half of Wednesday was spent reading through all of the documents and filling out all of the forms she received from PIH. As of this evening, she's done. Her documents and passport have been couriered to PIH for processing.

On that same Monday that Thuy received the email and documents, I went about carving my own path into PIH. I mentioned in a previous post that CM, the PIH member who called Thuy with the offer, told Thuy to have me email her with my resume so that she could look into potential PIH projects in West Africa for me to join while Thuy is there curing people. I took that evening to think about my introduction, and I emailed CM the following day.
