From Monday, December 2 to Thursday, December 5, Thuy and I have been on a three-day One Body Village mission to Cambodia.
During our time with Linh we learned about the plight of the small Vietnamese villages in Cambodia and what drives some parents to sell their young daughter's virginity.
We met with a few different families, each of whom had a different interaction with OBV Cambodia. One family finalized the details of their daughter's stay and sent her off with us after our visit. One mother tried to convince her daughter that staying with OBV would provide a better future for her. One family received an update on their daughter who has been staying with OBV for the past few months.
OBV Cambodia focuses on prevention, taking into its care girls who are considered 'at-risk' of being sold for various sexual purposes. The girls live in an undisclosed house outside of the city center of Phnom Penh. Here the girls receive nutritious meals, and education, clothing, and most importantly, a healthy and safe environment.
I interviewed Linh to help us better understand what we experienced during this trip, and to give us more context and background on the situation of these impoverished Vietnamese villages and the decisions some have made to sell their daughters.
